Digital Realty needed an animation partner to deliver regular animated films for their internal communications, each and every year. Shown in global All Hands meetings and on their LMS and learning platforms, these animated videos needed to be delivered within short time periods, 3-4 weeks from script to delivery. This meant creating a visual identity that could be easily adapted to new topics and that could handle a fast turnaround.

 

The result is a lasting partnership delivering animated content that has helped deliver their progressive company strategy and connected the entire global team together.

Our approach to connecting a global workforce through content?

As the world’s largest data centre platform, Digital Realty are a global company with a growing workforce. The content we continue to make for them needs to connect these worldwide teams together in a way feels relatable and personal. No easy task but with a willing set of employees ready to collaborate we were able to harness their voices and engage all teams.

Why did we make employees the voice of the films?

In full transparency using team members wasn’t something we considered early on. As content evolved and we produced more films, it became clear that there was another way to connect. Each film was instructed by a single team and it started to make sense to use their voices as the narration for the films. This really helped to personalise the content and make it feel like the messaging was coming from the company.

What strategy did we use to brand their internal communications?

Digital Realty came to us to produce bespoke animated content for their internal comms, tailored to them. Every film needed to speak their language, both in design and tone. With a blank sheet in front of us we looked to their external comms and created a sleek, minimalist style that would emulate the fast paced, tech driven personality of the brand.

How did we tailor animation styles to fit different budgets?

With short timeframes and varying budgets it was vital that we developed a way of working that would give good ROI. We therefore created two animation styles – one that would sit at a lower budget, using iconography and anthropomorphised dots to represent employees and secondly creating more realistic characters and narratives that led through journeys. The former became favourable for announcements and updates whilst the latter for times when more time and budget was available, perfect for those longer form, personal films.
